It's been said that the pain of passing a kidney stone is comparable to that of giving birth. A strong diuretic, dandelion stimulates blood circulation through the kidneys, increasing urine output and helping to flush out the stone. To make the tea, add 2 teaspoons dried herb to 1 cup boiling water. Steep for 15 minutes, then drink.

Consider drinking 2-3 cups a day of buchu tea. Like dandelion, this herb has diuretic properties which may help to flush out and prevent kidney stones. Place a sachet (2 g) of buchu into a cup of boiling water and drink 1 cup three times a day before meals. If you can't find a sachet version, buy the dried herb from a health food shop or online, and make the tea according to the instructions on the label.

Marshmallow tea is a must-have for anyone prone to developing kidney stones. It has what herbalists call a 'demulcent', or soothing, effect on the inflamed urinary tract, so aiding the transit of the stone out of the body.

 

 

Ouch! Take the Painful Approach

When you have a kidney stone, the slightest move is likely to be painful. But if you can bear to take a walk, try to do so. Walking may jar the stone loose. Despite the discomfort, you might pass the stone more quickly if you just keep moving.

Drink Enough Fluids

Many experts believe that the single most important thing you can do to prevent kidney stones is the same thing you do to make them pass more quickly - that is, drink enough fluids. Anyone who is prone to kidney stones should drink at least 8-10 cups of water a day, every day. The more you drink, the more you dilute the substances that form stones.

Low Fat Diet

Stick to a low-salt diet to reduce the calcium in your urine, which may reduce your risk of forming new stones. A good start is to limit your consumption of takeaway food, tinned soups and other processed foods. Read labels carefully. The target is less than 6 g salt (2400 mg sodium) a day.

Drink two 250-ml glasses of cranberry juice each day

Research suggests that it may help to reduce the amount of calcium in the urine. In one study of people with calcium stones, cranberry juice reduced the amount of calcium in the urine by as much as 50 per cent.

If you don't like cranberry juice, drink orange juice or homemade lemonade - 200 ml at each meal. The citric acid these juices contain will raise the citrate level in your urine, helping to keep new calcium stones from forming.

Take Magnesium 

Magnesium has been shown to prevent all types of kidney stones. Eat more foods rich in this mineral, such as dark green leafy vegetables, wheatgerm and seafood. You can also take 300 mg a day in supplement form.

Boost your intake of fruit and vegetables - bananas, oranges and orange juice - that are rich in potassium. In studies of people who ate a lot of fresh produce, the risk of kidney stones was cut by half. If you are at risk, ask your doctor if potassium supplements might help you to ward off future attacks.

Cut Your Caffeine

Cut back on coffee. Caffeine increases calcium in the urine, which increases the risk of stone formation.

How to Prevent Oxalate Kindney Stones

If you know your stones are made of calcium oxalate (a urine test can tell you), cut back on foods rich in oxalates. These foods include rhubarb, spinach, chocolate, wheat bran, nuts (especially peanuts), strawberries and raspberries. Also avoid drinking tea, which is high in oxalates.

How to Prevent Uric-Acid Kidney Stones 

If you have had uric-acid stones in the past, you need to keep your urine as alkaline as possible to prevent a recurrence. Avoid foods that raise acid levels, including anchovies, sardines, offal and brewer's yeast. Also, avoid eating more than 100 g meat or more than one serving of porridge, tuna, ham, lima beans or spinach in one day.

The Calcium Controversial

Calcium in the diet may help to prevent calcium oxalate stones, probably because calcium combines with oxalate in the intestine and so prevents the body's absorption of pure oxalate. Foods rich in calcium include milk, cheese, yogurt, dark green leafy vegetables, soya products, nuts and seeds.

Taking calcium supplements just after meals may have a similar effect, but taking them between meals can increase the risk of stones.
